Reporting Banded Snowy Plovers

Several research projects have banded adult and juvenile Snowy Plovers (SNPL) in Florida (Click here to see a photo of a banded Snowy Plover). Please help us track the banded birds by contributing your observations using the online form below. Each observation is very important since it provides a new time and location for a specific individual which is valuable data as researchers try to learn more about the movements, habitat requirements, and survival rates of Snowy Plovers in Florida.

Part III. Location

If you do not have GPS coordinates, please try to determine them with an internet-based tool (e.g. Google Earth or GET LAT LON). Otherwise, please write a detailed description with commonly used place names and estimated distances.

Part IV. Band Combination

Every bird should have an aluminum USFWS band (Fi)- this band very rarely falls off. No bands are bi-colored (2 colors per band) or tri-colored (3 colors per band). Sometimes two bands of the same color are placed over each other on the same leg, and this may look like one very tall band. Bands can fade, discolor and fall off so carefully record the color and whether the band is missing (NO BAND). If there is only one band on the lower leg, than mark the lower leg- top band as missing (NO BAND). If you are not certain about a particular band, please select undetermined. Notes on undetermined bands can be added below.

Part V. Notes

In addition to information on undetermined bands, please include the following: 1) describe any injuries as carefully and completely as possible; 2) note any breeding activity observed (e.g. broken-wing display, copulation, nest, chicks); 3) note whether the bird is in breeding or non-breeding plumage- learn how; and 4) if possible, the sex of the bird- learn how.
